Quote of the Moment

When speaking of Jesus, Garret Keizer said,

"Smite his cheek, and he turns you the other; slap the dignity of the house of prayer, however, and he turns over a table."

What about you? What's your favorite quote of the moment?

"The 'go' in 'go, therefore, and make disciples...' actually means 'go about your business'. Go, be a lawyer and make disciples. Go, be a CPA and make disciples. Go, be a teacher and make disciples. Go, do what God has called you to do. And make disciples." --The guest preacher in church on Sunday

"The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of, our attention would have been on God."
C.S Lewis is Prayer:Letters to Malcolm

I've been pondering on this in relation to the drive in a lot of churches to be fancier and more high tech.

John 1:12 "To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name".
For obvious reasons.

"The King is a big man, but he still can't eat his cookies with a shovel." One of my dad's favorite Hungarian quotes. Keeps me from getting too caught up in appearances.

"The reason they call them lessons, is because they lessen from day to day." Lewis Caroll in Alice in Wonderland. I know it isn't true. I love the irony.

Kelli, you took mine! I believe that quote is accredited to John Wayne. Here are two others I like:

"How is it that little children are so intelligent and men so stupid? It must be education that does it."
Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)

"Sleep is the best cure for waking troubles."
Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616)

My most recent fav quote is, I believe, by Garrison Keillor..."Going to church no more makes you a Christian than standing in a garage makes you a car."

I love it!

Shawna, that one is hanging above my office door.

entitled to his own truth. Truth is but one." Doug Groothius

"You can kill us, but you can't hurt us." Justin Martyr

"Nobody worries about Christ as long as he can be kept shut up in
churches. He is quite safe inside. But there is always trouble if you try and let him out." G. A. Studdert Kennedy

"Defend the Bible? I would just as soon defend a lion. Just turn the Bible loose. It will defend itself." Charles H. Spurgeon

"The longer you delay, the more your sin gets strength and rooting. If you cannot bend a twig, how will you be able to bend it when it is a tree?" Richard Baxter

We have little trouble picturing ourselves on God's side, but for the life of us we can't picture God stooping down enough to be on ours.

A guy was in a Christmas play I once saw. He was one of the Wise Men who was looking for baby Jesus. He forgot his line and blurted out, to the other guy in scene,

"Has anyone seen a small Christ child?"

"What you really have to do, if you want to be creative, is to unlearn all the teasing and censoring that you've experienced throughout your life. If you are truly a creative person, you know that feeling insecure and lonely is par for the course. You can't have it both ways: You can't be creative and conform, too. You have to recognize that what makes you different also makes you creative."
